General Information
Cooinda provides a home-like atmosphere for residents. Cooinda is centrally heated and a non-smoking environment is maintained. Fees are set by the Commonwealth Government, and an accommodation bond may be applicable. Cooinda is staffed 24hrs a day with trained Personal Carers. Residents are able to choose their own doctor, and medication is supervised by appropriately trained staff. A registered nurse reviews High Care Resident Care Plans on a regular basis, and Cooinda has access to the full range of Community Nursing Services, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Social Workers and Physiotherapists.

Local churches hold regular services for various denominations. A list of church services is available from the office.

Cooinda has a Residents Committee which meets regularly with Management in an open meeting. A monthly Newsletter is produced and is made available to Cooinda Stakeholders.

Prospective residents from a non-English speaking background can be accommodated.

Cooinda Aged Care Facility is Managed by a Board of Management comprised of local community business men and women, with extensive experience in community service and aged care.

Facilities
Cooinda is a home for 47 residents, consisting of private rooms with ensuites. There are tastefully furnished lounge areas. The main lounges have sound equipment, television and video, some lounges are used as quiet areas and other areas used for entertaining visitors - these have tea and coffee making facilities and full equipped kitchens or microvwaves and toasters.

There is a treatment room made available for all residents to consult with their LMO or health professional. Staff also use this room to carry out residents' individual health care treatments/requirements, in privacy.

There are three dining rooms - two seat 12 residents Madden & Gillard House) and the third seats 23 (Coates House). There is a function room for social and recreational activities. Three laundries are available for personal laundry. Cooinda is centrally heated by gas and each room has individual heaters. Gillard and Madden Houses have individual wall fans.

Accommodation
Residents of Cooinda have their own private rooms. There are three wings at Cooinda - Coates House, Madden House & Gillard House.

Beds, all bed linen, set of curtains and bath towels are supplied. Personal possessions are encouraged, such as television, radio, armchair, and telephone (providing room is not cluttered and does not create a fire hazard). Electric blankets of an approved type are permitted. The Supervisor must agree to personal items being brought into Cooinda as set out previously. Residents are responsible for the yearly checking of their electrical appliances by a licensed electrical contractor.

Smoking is not permitted indoors, however, smoking is permitted on external verandahs in the facility.

Tea and Coffee available 24 hrs per day from house kitchens - biscuits/cake also available.

Room service is provided to residents who have a short term illness which renders them incapable of attending the dining room. Early or late meals are supplied if residents are going out. Residents who have special dietary requirements are catered for, and these needs will be discussed upon admission. The menu is reviewed yearly by a qualified dietician. All food is cooked fresh on the premises. Fridges, electric kettles, microwaves and toasters are not permitted in residents' rooms.


Cooinda Auxilary
Cooinda has an active Auxiliary who raise funds for Cooinda through various activities eg. Garage Sale, Street Stalls and Competitions. Bingo and entertainmnet is conducted regularly in the Recreation Room or Coates House lounge for residents and friends of Cooinda. Service clubs, local businesses, churches, schools and clubs are encouraged to support Cooinda.

Recreational Activities
The Recreational Activities Officers are on duty Monday to Saturday. A program of recreational activities is developed in consultation with an on site qualified Diversional Therapist. Recreational activities aim to assist residents to engage in activities suited to personal interests and abilities. Cooinda also has a qualified Aged Care Aromatherapist who formulates aromatherapy interventions in consultation with care staff.

Community outings are available at Day Care, Regency Lodge and Gorrie Ban. Video held each Wednesday. The LINC Bus is hired for group outings to places of interest.

Mass is celebrated last Wednesday afternoon of the month, and weekly Sunday Services are held by various denominations in the main lounge.

Entertainers regularly visit Cooinda to provide a variety of music and sing-a-long sessions.

An hourly bus (low step type) to Lithgow town centre calls at Cooinda.

Visiting
Relatives and friends are welcome to visit between the hours of 8.00am and 8.00pm. A quiet lounge room is available if required. Residents are encouraged to maintain close contact with friends, relatives and the wider community. Visitors must check at front desk, and sign in and out of the premises. Prior to leaving the premises, residents must notify staff that they intend to be out, collect medication if required, and sign the courtesy sheet (time out and time in).

Other Services
Cooinda is visited by the Lithgow Library. Visits by the Royal Blind Society can also be arranged.

Audiology and Optometry services are able to visit Cooinda on request.

Private arrangements may be made with resident's personal hairdresser to visit.

Emergency Calls
A nurse call button is provided for each resident for use in emergency situations. Cooinda has 24 hour supervision by appropriately trained staff. Common areas have nurse call facilities

Medical Services
Residents are encouraged to make their own choice of doctor. Doctor K. Dunstan conducts weekly clinics on Monday mornings. Dr. Baraz holds a Saturday morning clinic on a weekly basis. Drs. Dearin and Associates visit by appointment. Drs. Browne, Stiles, Roebuck and Denovan visit by appointment. Emergency medical needs are dealt with at the local hospital or ambulance, depending upon need. A list of local doctors is provided at the back of the brochure.

Medication at the hostel is handled by appropriately trained staff, using the Webster Single Dose System. Self-medicating Residents are required to have a form signed by their LMO that this is permissible. Pharmacists calls daily for all pharmaceutical needs, and these are delivered to Cooinda, usually on the same day. Contracted Review Pharmacist review medications regularly, to ensure medications are managed safely and appropriately. A Registered Nurse reviews High Care Resident Care Plans every week, or more frequently if required and is on duty six mornings, Monday to Saturday. Community nurses also provide additional support with clinical needs of residents.

Residents' Committee
Residents' committee consists of six residents, selected by residents. Committee meets regularly in main lounge. Any grievances, concerns, complaints or suggestions are discussed, and allows residents a voice in the day to day running of Cooinda. The President of the Residents' Committee reports any problems or concerns to the Supervisor or Management as his or her discretion.

Fees
Fees are set by the Commonwealth Government, and are based on the capacity of the individual to pay. Generally the fee is equivalent to 85% of the full pension. The Government pays a subsidy to Cooinda according to the care needs of each resident. The fees cover cost of private room, heating, three hot meals per day, all heavy laundry, some personal laundry (excluding dry cleaning), cleaning of room and personal care services.
Fees do not cover personal services such as hairdressing, podiatry, services or maintenance or repair of personal items or equipment.

Residency
To be considered for residential care at Cooinda, it is necessary to apply for your name to be put on the waiting list. Visit Cooinda, talk to staff and residents. When you name is nearing the top of the list, the Supervisor will contact you if a vacancy is available, after consulting with the Aged Care Assessment Team. Priority is given to residents on waiting list requiring urgent placements by ACAT.. Contact the Aged Care Assessment Team at Lithgow Hospital to obtain further information.
